It’s difficult to name a favourite. The whole compilation has many great songs. This song just gets me.
Favorite track: The World is Beautiful.

After quietly disbanding No Flowers No Wedding Dress in 2002, the two founding members Shaun Corlson and Shaun Hoffmann determined to write and record some more tunes. They invited bassist and old friend, the Late David Brown to jam with them. These sessions yielded a few proto songs and a name DB Threshold. The name referred to the volume that Dave Brown (DB) played his bass. Which was loud! David at this point moved permanently to Europe, so armed with a few song ideas Shaun and Shaun went into Satellite Studios to begin work on what would become the 1000 Miles EP.
They tracked the drums, Vocals and Acoustic Guitars. Enlisting ex No Flowers Bassist Tim Keady to record the bass. Feeling the recording needed a little more magic David Bonser was bought in to play Electric guitar, and to become the third permanent member. Three of the tracks were then Mixed by Micheal Carpenter at Love HZ studio in Sydney. The remains two were mixed by Darren Halifax and the Band at Satellite Studio in Burswood.
In 2005 Eddie Robless joined the band on bass, in place of Tim Keady, who would return from time to time over the next few years. The new line up spent a few months experimenting with songs and dynamics, often playing in total darkness. To learn to listen to each other, and let only the sounds of each others playing guide us.
In late 2005 Manic Panic single was released, followed by the album ‘Tear The Darkness Down.’ The songs were recorded over two weekends at our rehearsal room. Shaun Corlson did vocals and acoustic overdubs at his home studio and the Album was mixed by David Bonser at his home Studio. Our first totally in house production. Salvage Diver Recording was coined as a label, but soon the band adopted Salvage Diver as its name.
Eddie at this point departs for Melbourne and the remaining threesome, the creative core of Shaun Hoffmann, David Bonser and Shaun Corlson start jamming and recording, Derek Hall in the control room at Shaun Hoffmann’s new rehearsal space/recording studio. We have about 60 live demos of song and song ideas from these sessions, some of which were turned into properly recorded songs others still wait for their future day in the sun perhaps.
These were some fun and creative sessions. Where the band created new songs out of recorded improvisation. Songs like Zeitgeist was created by an improvised drum take to a loop we created, using a recording of Hoffmann stomping up the staircase in the studio. David added a guitar rhythm idea and Shaun Corlson followed with three improvised vocal parts. Thats the guts of the song. Many songs and song beds were created this way.
The Midas EP was the first release under the new name of Salvage Diver. For this recording the band are joined by Englishman Rick Spencer on Keyboard. Chief song writer of english band Parma Violets. Rick contributes a song to the EP called I Wonder. Former No Flowers No Wedding Dress Guitarist Nigel Parry also contributes some guitar on the song Body Racks. The live line up had now expanded to 6 but due to availability that number varied.
Playing in the rehearsal studio with the full line was amazing at time and we really learned to pair back our parts and work together. It was a sound to blow minds. One night we were even expanded to seven when Ricky Mayemi from ‘The Brian Jonestown Massacre’ joined us for a jam. Playing David Mcomb songs as well as a cosmic jam called ‘Weed Wars’.
As studio time and band members availability became harder and harder to work around, the band not so much broke up, but ceased to be. David Bonser moved from the rat race. Playing guitar and tinkering in his home studio. Shaun Hoffmann joined The Beautiful Losers as well as overseeing his sons (The Morning Night) musical endeavours. Shaun Corlson recorded and released home recorded solo albums and also playing guitar in The Polite Society. Shaun and Shaun also played together with the late Richard Lane (ex Stems), in a combo called The Lazy Shavers. As well as playing with Steve Kilbey (The Church), in his touring band.
In 2018 Shaun Corlson embarked on finishing and mixing songs from our many rehearsal and writing sessions. The End result was the album ‘I Cant Find The Surface’. Released on Bandcamp in 2019.
Giant is an anthology of the Db Threshold/Salvage Diver recorded output. It includes all the tracks from ‘Tear The Darkness Down’ remixed by David Bonser. All songs from ‘1000 Miles’, ‘Midas’ and ‘I Can’t Find The Surface’ remastered for this release by David Bonser. It contains demos, live recordings as well as alternative versions and mixes of songs. It also features a remaster / alternative mix of ‘The World is Beautiful’, which appears on Corlson’s solo album’The Enemy That Doesn’t Exist’. This song finds a place as it was based on a Salvage Diver jam, that David contributes some great guitar to it, and Richard Spencer provides spacious and enveloping keyboard sounds.
